Industrial Tour 2024: Building Bridges Between Theory and Practice in Civil Engineering

The journey from theory to practice is often the most enlightening aspect of any educational pursuit. For the final year students of the Civil Engineering Department, Session 2020, this transition was vividly realized during their recent 5-day industrial tour across Punjab and KPK provinces.

Under the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Irfan-ul-Hassan, Dr. Muhammad Azhar Saleem, Dr. Ehtesham Mehmood, and Engr. Abdul Rehman, students delved into a world where textbooks came to life and classroom theories found practical application. Each day brought forth a new realm of learning, offering insights that could never be gleaned from lectures alone.

The tour commenced with a deep dive into the intricacies of high-rise construction, courtesy of Izhar Group of Companies. Students were treated to a firsthand demonstration of advanced construction methodologies, including underground construction techniques. Witnessing the complexities of concrete pouring and formwork underscored the importance of precision and innovation in structural engineering.

Transitioning to the Ghazi Barotha, students were awed by the grandeur of the main barrage and the intricate network of hydraulic structures that support it. Engineers from WAPDA generously shared their expertise, providing invaluable insights into hydroelectric power production. A visit to the Barotha power station further solidified their understanding of sustainable energy resources, leaving a lasting impression on their minds.

At Bestway Cement Factory, students marveled at the seamless automation of cement manufacturing processes. From raw material handling to packaging, the incorporation of technology was evident at every step. The visit also shed light on state-of-the-art structural designs implemented by Chinese companies, showcasing the global collaboration that fuels industrial progress.

The excursion to Khanpur Dam was a highlight of the tour, offering a comprehensive look into dam engineering. Students gained insights into operational capacities and spillway mechanisms, courtesy of senior engineers from WAPDA. Beyond academia, the visit provided opportunities for recreational activities, fostering bonds of camaraderie amidst the scenic backdrop of Khanpur Dam.

In closing, the industrial tour of session 2020 was more than just an educational outing; it was a transformative experience that bridged the gap between theory and practice. The knowledge gained and memories created will serve as guiding beacons as these budding engineers embark on their professional journeys.
