Exploring Sustainable Energy: A Journey to Marala Hydel Power Plant

In the heart of Punjab, nestled along the serene banks of the Chenab River, lies a marvel of engineering and sustainability – the Marala Hydel Power Plant (MHPP). Recently, a group of eager minds from the Civil Engineering department at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, from the 2021 session, embarked on a transformative journey, in the supervision of Engr. Usman Ali, to witness firsthand the intricate workings of this hydroelectric powerhouse.

The Marala Hydel Power Plant stands as a testament to ingenuity, harnessing the kinetic energy of the Chenab River to generate electricity. Situated strategically along a link canal of the river, the plant boasts four turbines, collectively churning out an impressive 7.64 MW of power. However, on the day of our visit, only two turbines were operational, contributing 3.7 MW to the grid.

Peering down into the depths, students witnessed the colossal turbines and shafts submerged nearly 100 feet below the surface, a visual representation of the power concealed within the rushing waters. The seasonal fluctuations in output were explained, with maximum electricity generation witnessed during the summer months of June, July, and August.

One of the highlights of the tour was the visit to the spillway, where students observed firsthand the meticulous management of water levels to optimize power generation. Guided by the expertise of the MHPP staff, students gained insights into the intricate balance between engineering precision and environmental stewardship.

Throughout the tour, students seized the opportunity to engage with the engineers at MHPP, posing insightful questions and unraveling the complexities of hydel power generation. From the nuances of turbine mechanics to the principles of electrical engineering, every query was met with clarity and expertise, enriching the learning experience for all.

As the day drew to a close, and the sun began its descent, the convoy bid farewell to Marala Cantt, embarking on the journey back to UET Lahore. A brief pause at Wazirabad Road provided a moment of reflection and replenishment, as students broke for Jumma prayers and nourishment before resuming the homeward bound voyage.

As the clock struck 1800 hrs, weary yet enlightened, the students returned to UET Lahore, their minds buzzing with newfound knowledge and inspiration. The Marala Hydel Power Plant tour had not only unveiled the inner workings of sustainable energy production but had also ignited a passion for engineering innovation and environmental conservation.

In the annals of their academic journey, this excursion would stand as a beacon of experiential learning, a testament to the power of exploration and discovery. Armed with insights and perspectives garnered from the MHPP tour, these future engineers from the 2021 session are poised to lead the charge towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient tomorrow.
