PhD Milestone Achieved by Dr. Adeel Faisal at UET Lahore’s Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore proudly announces the successful completion of PhD by Dr. Adeel Faisal (Reg. No. 2018-PhD-Civil-02). Dr. Adeel Faisal’s PhD research was supervised by Dr. Safeer Abbas, Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, UET Lahore, and co-supervised by Dr. Ali Ahmed, Associate Professor at the same department.

The public seminar for the defense of Dr. Adeel Faisal’s PhD research was held on 13th September 2024, at 2:30 PM in the Department of Civil Engineering, UET Lahore. Dr. Safeer Abbas introduced the PhD candidate and elaborated on the key points of the research.

Dr. Adeel Faisal’s dissertation, titled “Structural Performance of Spun-Cast Full Scale Reinforced Concrete Pipes Incorporating Hybrid Fibers,” focused on exploring the use of hybrid fibers as an alternative to traditional steel reinforcement in full-scale spun-cast concrete pipes. These pipes are commonly used in sewerage and drainage systems. His study involved both laboratory experiments and field tests, showing promising results. The incorporation of polypropylene (PP) fibers alongside steel fibers in the concrete pipes resulted in significantly higher cracking loads (up to 58%) and ultimate load capacity (up to 23%) compared to traditional reinforced concrete (RC) pipes. Furthermore, the field tests on buried pipes confirmed the laboratory findings, presenting a compelling case for the adoption of spun-cast hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (SPHFRC) pipes in practice.

The innovative research is expected to simplify the production process by eliminating the laborious task of steel cage fabrication, while also enhancing the resilience of concrete pipes used in crucial infrastructure.

The Department of Civil Engineering and the faculty extend their heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Adeel Faisal on this outstanding achievement and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.
